UPDATE: CHP Officer on Life Support, Not Expected to Survive I-680 Shooting

ALAMO (KRON) -- A California Highway Patrol officer is on life support and is not expected to survive  after an exchange of gunfire that left the driver of a Jeep dead.

Witnesses tell KRON 4 News the officer had pulled over the Jeep on Southbound I-680 at Livorna Road at about 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.  It's unclear why gunfire was exchanged.  The officer sustained potentially life threatening wounds.  A second CHP officer responding to the emergency call fired into the Jeep where the suspect was hit.

Authorities say the initial call on the incident came from a motorist who dialed 911 and not from the initial officer.  The second officer rendered medical aid before an ambulance took the wounded lawperson to the hospital.

Investigators had put out an alert for a Nissan Maxima as a second suspect vehicle but authorities tracked the car to Danville and interviewed the driver.  She had been pulled over on an unrelated traffic stop and is not connected with this shooting, Contra Costa County Sheriff's Dept. Spokesman Jimmy Lee says.

Southbound I-680 remains closed to all traffic and is likely to continue that way for hours.  Traffic on the northbound side re-opened just after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday.
