Correctional officer’s daughter makes it to the Olympics in BMX

Correctional Officer Todd Crain’s daughter, Brooke, 19, will compete as a member of the United States women’s BMX team beginning Wednesday. Crain works at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, Corcoran.

Initially, Brooke was going to London as an alternate after an injury at the Olympic Trials kept her from a position on the team.

In May, Brooke participated in the Olympic Trials in London and, as one of the best women’s BMXers in the world over the last few years, was positioned to earn her spot on the US Olympic team. However, an accident during a preliminary event caused Brooke to crash, breaking the humerus bone in her arm.

“There was a lot of disappointment just because I worked so hard,” Brooke said. Brooke was given the chance to compete next week after U.S. women’s BMXer Arielle Martin suffered an injury last week at the Olympics Training Center in Chula Vista. Now, Brooke believes she can win a gold medal.

“I think I can win gold,” Brooke said. “My family believes in me and I believe in myself.

The 19-year old has not yet fully recovered from her injury, but she has been given doctor’s clearance and will likely rely on a cortisone shot and pure adrenaline to help her fight through any pain.
