Staff, volunteers and inmates walk to end breast cancer at San Quentin State Prison.
The staff and inmates of San Quentin State Prison on July 7 and July 8 will be collaborating in a walk to end breast cancer.
Four years ago, several San Quentin inmates were watching TV and saw the advertisement for the Avon Walk to End Breast Cancer. They thought about the ways breast cancer has impacted their own lives, as many of their own sisters, daughters, mothers, and wives have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Although many of the men could not be near their loved ones while they were treated for the disease, they could provide support by raising money for Avon.
The San Quentin men have walked every year since.
This year, the San Quentin Walk to End Breast Cancer will involve 200 SQ inmates, who have made donations to Avon and have registered to walk. The two-day walk will occur in San Quentin’s lower yard and will include incarcerated men, community volunteers and prison staff. Together, they are committed to raising $10,000 for Avon.
Incarcerated men have also made donations in artwork and jewelry, and more artwork will be made during the walk. All donated artwork and crafts will be auctioned off to raise money for the Women’s Cancer Resource Center in Oakland.
